The REAL Aquarium

Yesterday, our excellent guide Jeff led Jessi, Lisa and myself over lava fields to find the "Aquarium." This aptly named snorkel spot is off the beaten track. After driving south past the posh resorts of Wailea and past our favourite hotel the Maui Prince we entered the Ahihi preserve. Jeff parked us at the side of the road and we climbed over a small rock wall to find a path snaking into the wilderness alongside a barbed wire fence with large "Keep Out" signs. Aparently the neighbours to this path don't like tourists!

The path opened out onto the lava flow. From here the going was hard. It was a 1/2 hour scramble of jagged lava rocks. The going was slow but we finally made it to our destination. It was more than worth it. The Aquarium lived up to its name. As soon as we slipped into the water we were surrounded by an awesome array of fish.

We swam around the aquarium for almost an hour. We saw many things including the largest sea turtle we'd ever seen, neet looking trumpet/cornet fish and a large eel.

Here's some video from The Aquarium.
