New Pictures

We posted a whole whack of pictures up to the website. They are most of the professional shots and all of the good shots off of my video camera. I'm very slowly working my way through the pictures I've recieved and cataloging them. I've got all the video on my computer now and I am going to start creating little movies soon (like underwater, driving, etc.).

Here's the wedding album:

Long Trip, but we're home

The flight was long and draining but we arrived safely in Toronto yesterday. We've been relaxing since then, getting a few chores done like laundry, shopping and the like. I will post a new message as soon as I have some more content to add.

If you have any pictures/video from the trip please send them to me and I will add them to the compilation CD/DVDs

Last Day

Well, the time has finally come to return to the great white north. We're mostly bitter-sweet about returning home. We will miss Maui but I, for one, am looking forward to returning to my home life.

Yesterday was a mostly lazy day. We swam in the ocean and in the pool. We drove to Kahului to exchange the car (we got an old Grand Am that's suped out with a sport package and all scraped up. I guess they don't trust me anymore!). We had last milkshakes at Ruby's Diner and stopped for shave ice (the family is going again this morning for the last time!).

Today will be more of the same. We're just packing, rearranging furniture and the like before checkout time at 11:00. We will see some of you very soon!

Brunch in a new year

Yesterday we a New Years Day brunch at the Maui Prince. Once again it was DELICIOUS!!! We stuffed ourselves silly for the last time here in Maui. Jessi had a migraine so after that we had a very quiet day. Just some pool time (I filmed Riley goofing around so he could show his peeps back home.

Today is another slow day. We bobbed in the Ocean (huge waves today) and we are planning to sit by the pool later (I have to switch cars but that won't take too long).

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year)

It's 11:22 here as I write this and we've celebrated the new year in several time zones (Toronto at 7, Winnipeg at 8, Calgary at 9 and finally Vancouver at 10). We also celebrated at 11 although we weren't sure where in the world it was midnight then, but it must've been somewhere. Now the tired countdown begins. The group has whittled down to just Jessi, Lisa (Update: Lisa conked out at 11:40!) and Me. We're determined to make it to midnight but we're freaking tired...

Today was slow and chillaxing. We went to Safeway and had Coldstone Icecream again (It was good). We went to the pool for a bit then went with the cuz's (Jen and Lisa) to Pizza Hut where I did NOT eat any delicious yummy gluten-filled meat-lovers personal pan pizza. I swear... Then we stopped for Shaved Ice on the way back (what will I do back in the T. without the shaved ice???). We made delicious mango daquiris for happy hour and we popped open one of the wedding champagne bottles to toast one of the new years (I think it was Winnipeg) so that Granddad could go home and catch some zZz's.

Speaking of catching some sleep, only thirty minutes left until we can finally go to sleep...

Surfin' Goats and Upcountry

Yesterday we decided try upcountry again. As you may recall, last time we only made it as far as the Kula Lodge where we stopped and turned around. This time, Jen and Lisa came with us and we took the "shortcut" up instead of the Haleakala hwy. The shortcut was very pretty and it took us through the back country.

We stopped at the Surfing Goat Dairy on the way up. We took a quick tour and learned about the farm and Jen and Jessi fell in love with the young goats. They were just weaned from their mama's so they would try to suckle from Jen, Jessi and Lisa's fingers. They also had three dogs (2 border collies and 1 stray). Lisa fell in love with the stray. Now Jen wants to move to Maui and become a goat farmer! The adventerous ones (everyone but me!) tried some of the award winning cheese the dairy produces (they liked it!).

After the dairy we headed along the Kula hwy south to the Tedeschi Winery and Ulupalakua ranch store. There we picked up some snacks (ice cream, pasta salad and pina colada popcorn!) and had a washroom break. Jessi sampled some of the local wines and really enjoyed the sparkling pineapple wine and the pineapple-passionfruit white wine.

The road meandered south along the face of Haleakala. It was quite a beautiful drive! The terrain goes from ranch country to forests to barren lava-scapes. The road dips down to the ocean again and loops around to Hana if you keep going. We turned back where the road turns bumpy and unpleasant. On the way back we spotted a short-eared owl on the side of the road. It was quite a neat sighting for us!

We stopped at Ruby's diner on the way home and everyone had milkshakes and burgers. All told a great day!

Today is new years day so Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year!).

Molokai, Whales and Car Insurance

Today, Gaby and Richard treated Jessi and I to a trip over to the island of Moloka'i. We drove to Lahaina at 6:00am to catch the ferry over. Jessi woke up with a migraine so I was really worried about here but she doped herself up and pulled through like the trooper she is! The ferry trip was excellent. It was an hour and a half ride but we got to see several whales close up!

When we got to the island we took a shuttle van to the Moloka'i Hotel where we picked up our car. Although I signed on as a second driver, Richard drove the whole time. The car was a bit beat-up (they all are on Moloka'i) so we almost blended in as locals.

We drove west to our first stop: the lookout that looks out over the old Leper colony. We took a path down through an impressive Eucalyptus forest to the edge of a giant sea cliff. Moloka'i has some of the worlds tallest sea cliffs. We couldn't really see them from our vantage point but we were standing on one! The view was awe-inspiring and the story heart-wrenching. Hawaiian Lepers were exiled to this little colony which was cut off from the rest of the island by near-impassable cliffs (you need to fly in or take a donkey ride down a steep trail). They didn't even land the boats, they just tossed the lepers overboard and let them swim for it. The lepers were mistreated by most until a cure was found (mid 1900's I think).

We stopped for groceries in the main town and headed east on the only highway on Molokai'i. The views were spectacular. The road was lined with fishponds and sandy beaches. We stopped at one beach where Jessi made some canine friends!

The road climbed up into the foothills and then down into the Halawa valley where we stopped. A river comes down from the foot of a huge waterfall (we could only see it for a few seconds from the road) and then winds through the valley until it meets the ocean. A neat little place and another of Hawaii's many diverse biospheres.

We returned the rental car and caught the ferry back. We saw more whales on the way back. Gaby and Jessi said they saw a few whales breaching but I missed it. The sun set over Lana'i (another island) while we docked in Lahaina. We wanted to have dinner in Lahaina so we stopped by my car to drop off our bags. We were dismayed to find a scratch on the front bumper! ARGH.. Only a few days left in the vacation and the car gets scratched. The good news is that my insurrance will cover it (completely) so I don't have to worry about anything.

Because it was Boat Day in Lahaina the town was full of people fresh off the cruise ships. We couldn't find a restaurant with less than a one hour wait so we decided to drive over to Ma'alea. Our first choice restaurant "Seascapes" was closed for a private function so we head over to Ted and Adam's The Place. Jessi and I had stopped there before. The food was great and the service was excellent.

Now us weary travellers must head to bed... Here's a video of the Trip to Moloka'i.

Hawaiian Temples

Yesterday Jessi and I drove to Kahului to hit the Walmart (oh fun!) for some necessities. While we were in the neighbourhood we also stopped in at Maui Tropical Soaps to pick up some sweet smelling soaps for ourselves!

We swung up into Wailuku to visit the ancient Hawaiian temple site there. Well it was little more than some rocks in a large square formation set on a hill. Not too impressive but the view was nice! We stopped at Ruby's diner for lunch on the way back. It's one of our favourite places to eat on Maui (they have killer milkshakes like the Peanut Butter Cup one that we shared this time!).

We hit the pool for a while and served up Mango-Peach daquiries (there wasn't enough frozen mango so we had to add peaches). They were VERY VERY tasty (we used Mango flavoured rum as well!).

Today we all went to the ocean to bob in the waves and now Jessi and are going to the covered market to hunt for "Just Maui'd" souveniers and then more relaxing! :) Tommorow Gaby, Richard, Jessi and I will are taking a boat over to Molokai (another island). I'll let you know how that goes!

The REAL Aquarium

Yesterday, our excellent guide Jeff led Jessi, Lisa and myself over lava fields to find the "Aquarium." This aptly named snorkel spot is off the beaten track. After driving south past the posh resorts of Wailea and past our favourite hotel the Maui Prince we entered the Ahihi preserve. Jeff parked us at the side of the road and we climbed over a small rock wall to find a path snaking into the wilderness alongside a barbed wire fence with large "Keep Out" signs. Aparently the neighbours to this path don't like tourists!

The path opened out onto the lava flow. From here the going was hard. It was a 1/2 hour scramble of jagged lava rocks. The going was slow but we finally made it to our destination. It was more than worth it. The Aquarium lived up to its name. As soon as we slipped into the water we were surrounded by an awesome array of fish.

We swam around the aquarium for almost an hour. We saw many things including the largest sea turtle we'd ever seen, neet looking trumpet/cornet fish and a large eel.

Here's some video from The Aquarium.

The Road to Hana

Today, Jessi, Jen and I drove the road to Hana (well, Jessi and Jen technically rode the road to Hana but who cares!). We had an awesome time. We got up at the way-to-early time of 5:00 am and were well on our way by 7:30 (we had to stop at Safeway for snacks and stuff).

The road was incredible as usual. Everyone enjoyed the views and Jessi recorded some shots from the sun-roof while we drove (I'll get to those in T-Dot). For those of you who have never heard of the Road to Hana, it's really about the drive not the destination (as the name implies). The road hugs lush tropical rainforests and plunging cliffs. You drive past spectacular waterfalls and mind-numbing vistas. You drive through Bamboo forests, past fire-blossom trees and under ancient canopies. All told it's a long windy narrow drive (pictures and video to come I promise!) and a little harrowing at times (like when this giant truck barrelled around a corner over the center line and I had to swerve into the one foot shoulder without going over the edge of a cliff...) but it's a must-see attraction in Maui.

This time we were more adventurous and drove past the half-way point (a very scenic spot called the Ke'anae pininsula). In fact, we made it all the way to Hana and even further to the Seven Sacred Pools. The pools are part of Haleakala park and are a series of pools connected by waterfalls that cascade down the volcano to meet the ocean. Jessi and Jen went for a dip in one of the pools and frolicked under a waterfall (they almost gave my a heart-attack climbing up the slippery rocks!). Up to this point there had been very few others on the road or at the pools themselves, but as we left the roads became packed with caravans of tourists (they seemed to stick together in groups of four or five, probably to avoid conflict with the locals!).

We drove back over to Hana where we were very adventurous again. On the advice of my Auntie Anne and almost everyone who has read the book "Maui Revealed" we parked on a little dead-end street in Hana. We found Jessi a bathroom (our fourth of the day!) and strolled across an open field to a little path. On the path we met some very odd and unfriendly locals having a beer under a tree with their loose pit-bull. Needless to say we hurried on past them. The path wound along the side of a cinder-cliff which looked far from stable. The path itself shifted with every step. It was barely a foot wide at points and evidence of slides was prevailant! As you may assume, we made it through without injury (in fact the only injuries occured at Safeway where Jen cut her big toe leaving the car and Jessi dropped a can of Diet Coke on her foot!). We were rewarded with an awesome sight (Again, pictures to follow later!). The beach itself was small but very red. We made it to the fabled red sand beach of Hana. The sand wasn't actually very nice to walk on, but it was a very unique place and I must now join the throngs of others who will tell you how to get there.

After making it safely back to the car, we engaged on our final stop: The Lava Tubes. Some entreprenuer moved to Hana a while back and bought up the land that contained these caves. He excavated them and made them easier for tourists to visit. So for a well-worth-it $12.50 we descended into the darkness of the lava tube. Having never been in a large cave before it was quite awe inspiring. To add to that awe was the fact the the tube was carved out by consecutive flows of lava. The whole cave (it took about 20 minutes to walk it's length) was neat but part of it looks just like a giant pile of chocolate ice cream.

As we emerged from the cave we were greated with torrential downpour. This is what the windward side of the island is famous for (and why they call it a rainforest). Suprisingly, despite the fact that I've been at least part of the way to Hana four times before this, it was the first time it rained on me. And boy did it! The sky opened up and let lose. We got totally soaked. We had PB&J sandwiches (rice cakes for me!) in the car before driving home through the rain (which was actually very fun). We got some neat footage of the rain so you can see it once we get back to T.O.

All told it was a fantastic (though exhausting) day. Now we are skipping happy-hour for some much needed downtime.

SHARK ATTACK

Jessi and I decided to go for a walk along the Wailea beach walk today. We drove down to the Grand Wailea and discovered that the beach access road was cordoned off. We thought that maybe they were doing construction or something so we continued south to another beach access road. The parking lot was closed off so we gave up and headed back to Kihei. On the way we stopped at a beach access parking lot just south of us to check out the beach (we hadn't been there yet this time).

To our surprise we discovered a worker putting up the sign you see above. Apparently (and this just happened today so facts are somewhat sketchy) there was a shark attack near the Grand Wailea. What we've heard so far is that a guy was swimming somewhere between 100 feet and 400 yards out and he had his hand nibbled on by a twelve foot tiger shark. We were told that he made it to shore but he's missing a few digits.

To make matters worse for us, we walked down to the beach accross the road from us to discover that our very own Kamaole Beach Park III was closed for the same reason. Jessi and I are now a little nervous to reenter the water, even when they open the beach again. Here's a picture of our beach with the shark sighting sign (note that nobody is in the water!!!)...

Wedding Photos Online

Look at our photo album to see a sample of official wedding shots I just put online.

Priceless Memories?

Jessi and I trecked up to Wailuku today to meet with our photographer John Henry. He's a very friendly guy and walked us through over 100 photos of our wedding day. We choose our favourite 65 which will go into an awesome looking coffee table book. We also shelled out a little extra to buy photo CDs of all the pictures so we can make our own prints at will. We are very pleased with the way the pictures turned out but it put a REAL BIG dent in our wallets! Oh well, you only get married in Maui once.

John (the photographer) apprently also did the photos for many big celebrities including Dr. Dre (he asked him what kind of a doctor he was), Leslie Nielson and many sports people (I don't remember their names!). He even gave Jessi a very pretty bracelet his daughter made (her names also Jessica!). Anyways, we have to wait a while for the coffee table book but I am hoping to put up the wedding photos soon.

At John's recomendation, we tried a nice little restaurant in Ma'alea called The Place. They had very reasonable prices and very friendly staff. Jessi and I shared Thai summer rolls and Phad Thai.

Whales, Dolphins and Jessi Oh MY!!!

Today we cruised over the waters off of the west coast of Maui searching for the ellusive Humpback whale. We are pleased to report that we saw not one, but eight of the giant mammals. We took another cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation. They were awesome tour guides as usual and the ocean was very cooperative. We also saw bottlenosed dolphins. Everyone was speechless. It was very impressive. We also bought our traditional Conch shell to bring home (we have one from 2001 and 2003 too!). Now we're feeling tired and a bit of sun-stroke. We are going to happy hour at the Barry Lundeen's now.

P.S. WE MISS LAURA!!!

Upcountry, Humuhumu's, Brunch and Stuff

So, it's been a while since I last had time to get on the computer. So here's the update for the last couple of days... On Saturday, Jessi and I took a nice drive up country to the Kula lodge. It's about 1/3 of the way up the Haleakala volcano. The view from the restaurant is awesome. Here on the right you can see the West Maui Mountains in the distance. They're completely dead while the one we're on in the picture is just dormant. The lunch was awesome. Jessi had a pasta dish with pesto cream sauce and I had some ribs.

We vetoed the rest of the upcountry drive because we were kind of tired and it is just more of the same really! We stopped at the Alexander & Baldwin sugar museum on the way home and learned way more than we ever wanted to know about the manufacturing process of sugar. They told us all about why they burn the cane (to get rid of the leaves of course) and why Maui has soo much ethnic diversity (they imported labour from places like Japan, China, Fillipines, Portugal, etc, etc). We even learned that they had Cock fights (that's jessi pretending to be a chicken in a Cock fight on the left). We went swimming in the pool when we got home then we got ready for our fancy dinner at Humuhumunukunukuapua'a's.

The dinner was at a restaurant in the Grand Wailea which is one of the fanciest resorts on the Island. We had drinks in the bar and watched the sunset. We saw whales spouting (coming up for air) off on the horizon. Jessi and I shared the Kiowi which is the drink for lovers. It came in a HUGE cup and we were both quite buzzed after we finished that. We moved over to the restaurant area to have dinner. I had some ribs for an appetizer and some chicken for the main. It was fantastic! We were seronaded by some musicians who sang the Hawaiian Wedding song for Jessi and I and the Aloha (farewell) song for Laura (she's leaving today!).

Sunday we drove up to Ka'anapoli for a buffet breakfast at the Sheraton. The food was delicious and we took a strole on the beach front walk past all the hotels down to the Hyatt. Trudi and Riley came with us because they wanted to see the penguins at the Hyatt. Riley was tired by the time we got there so we rode the green trolley back to the Sheraton. Jessi and I spent the afternoon at the pool and then prepared drinks for happy hour. Our specialty drink for the night was a Banana Daquiri. It was quite a hit! Gaby made build-your-own fajitas for pupu's (appetizers). The youngun's stayed late and played cards for a while. That's jessi riding a frog statue on the beach walk. Don't ask...

This morning we went for a snorkel down at the beach but it was far to wavy so we just bobbed in the waves. Angela, Madie and Beth joined the Lundeen's for the swim. Madie was very brave and even swam by herself in the huge surf (with several anxious adults very close by!)!

Lazy Day

I've decided to switch over to a blog to record our experiences here on Maui. It was getting far to unorganized over on the main site for that. So here I will continue the daily comments on our trip.

Today is a lazy day. Jessi and I are both feeling a little slow today and I think she has a little headache. We're thinking about heading upcountry for the day. It's a nice little drive with scenic views of the island. Either way, we're headed to Humuhumunukunukuapua'a's for drinks and dinner tonight to wish farewell to Laura who is leaving on Monday.
